Writing Prompts for Christmas

Take 2, 5 or more minutes, even longer if you’re inspired and can escape the family!

  1. How festive are you feeling right at this moment?
  2. Who are you looking forward to seeing over the festive period? Who are you least looking forward to seeing?
  3. What present have you most enjoyed buying?
  4. What do you really want for Christmas?
  5. Think up some new collective nouns for: reindeer; elves; cracker jokes; snowmen; carol singers; mince pies; noisy children; supermarkets; Christmas trees; Christmas presents; and Christmas films.
  6. Think of the different aromas of Christmas. Write a list, a poem, a short description or a story.
  7. Write a page of dialogue between a reformed Scrooge and his Tax Inspector.
  8. List your achievements in 2024 – writing and non-writing.
  9. Describe snow, snowballs, snowmen and sledging to someone who has never seen snow before.
  10. What difference would MOTHER Christmas make?
  11. Two neighbours compete over who can put up the most Christmas lights.
  12. Write a piece from the point of view of a homeless person on Christmas Eve.

13. The door to the Gingerbread House opens …
14. Does your family have a Christmas tradition? Like not opening presents until after breakfast. If you don’t have one, make one up and write a scene about it.
15. You receive a very generous Secret Santa gift at work, and then you find out who it’s from.
16. List the magical ingredients you would use for your Christmas pudding, starting with 100 grams of good health.
17. What would you change about Christmas if you had the power?
18. Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas church services from 1656, and everyone had to work on December 25th. Write a story set in that time.
19. It’s Christmas morning and Rudolph has just finished his shift.
20. What do you want in 2025?
